Indonesia Ratifies 1988 SOLAS Protocol

To promote safety of life at sea, Indonesia has ratified the 1988 Protocol relating to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) 1974 through decree No.57 of 2017 issued by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Mr.Joko Widodo, on 30 May 2017 in Jakarta.

This Protocol was drawn up by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London, England on 11 November 1988.

While SOLAS 1974 and its amendments, regulate safety on board vessels in general, the 1988 SOLAS Protocol regulates and harmonizes the duration of certificate validity and the periodicity of inspections, including initial inspections, annual inspections, intermediate inspections and renewal inspections. The 1988 Protocol sets the maximum period of validity at five years for cargo ship certificates and 12 months for the Passenger Ship Safety Certificates.
