Riots Gain Cameroon’s Capital

Back To Index

Despite the end of the Douala taxi strike and the government’s promise of Wednesday evening to reduce petrol prices by approximately 0.01 Euros, the troubles which initially started in Douala over the weekend have now spread to the country’s capital, Yaoundé.

In addition to the high cost of fuel, protestors are angry about increased food prices and the resulting drop in in standards of living. Rumours that President Biya, who has already been in power for the last 25 years, is seeking to modify the Constitution in order to stand at the next elections have added fuel to the fire.

As per our news item of yesterday, the Port of Douala remains closed and Budd Cameroon’s staff are available on their AOH coordinates while our head office in Marseille remains on hand to assist in case of difficulty (general.marseille@budd-pni.com, Tel: +33 491 33 58 33, Fax: +33 491 33 13 31).
