Strike Closes Port in Conakry

Back To Index

In a context of ever-increasing fuel and food prices, the country of Guinea has been hit by a series of strikes by civil servants.

Following the Army whose low-ranking soldiers recently received back payments on their salaries amounting to $1,000.00 plus promotions, the Police and Customs Officers have now gone on strike. They are seeking pay rises as well as promotion and reliable supplies of their main food staple, rice.

As a result, our local office informs us that the port of Conakry has been temporarily closed although there is every hope that, like their military counterparts, the strikers will return to work as soon as at least some of their demands are met.

In the meantime, Mr El K Condé (Mobiles: +224 63 40 24 91 or 224 64 20 68 41) and Mr Fode Mario Camara (Mobiles: +224 60 25 58 34 or +224 64 20 93 11) are still at the helm of Budd’s Conakry office and can be contacted on their mobile phones.
