Tempory Port Closure in Malabo

Back To Index

17 February 2009 Our colleages in Malabo have just alerted us to the fact that the port has been closed for the day following exchanges of gunfire between bands of outlaws, thought to be from nearby Nigeria or Cameroon, and Police/Military forces.

The delinquents were first spotted sailing close to the coast off the Ela Nguema neighbourhood to the east of Malabo city at around 04:30 lt. The authorities attempted to stop them from venturing closer to the city of Malabo but fighting nevertheless reached the Commercial Port.

It would appear that the situation has been under control since 07:00 lt this morning. There is a heavy Police/Army presence on the streets and people are staying at home as a precautionary measure.

It is expected that the port will resume its activities once again tomorrow.
