Work Stoppage in Conakry

Back To Index

Please note that following a Union announcement to which the Guinean Government appears to have tacitly agreed, all work stopped on Monday, 12 October and again today, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 to further mourn those who died in an opposition rally two weeks ago in Conakry.

Over the telephone this morning, Mr Fodé Mario Camara of our Conakry office told us that, like the town of Conakry itself, the port is at a standstill.

He added that it is unclear whether these two days should be considered as official public holidays or whether they fall into the category of strike action.

It would appear that the stoppage is being enforced by threatening-looking individuals who will stop and question the foolhardy few who venture out onto the streets.

For further information, please do not hesitate to contact Mr Camara on his mobile ‘phone: +224 60 25 58 34 or +224 64 20 93 11.
