COVID-19: Confinement & Sanitary Inspections in Abidjan, Ivory Coast

We have just heard that in the ongoing confinement process, it will no longer be possible to leave or enter the town of Abidjan from midnight tonight (26 March 2020).

Ivory Coast Confinement Measures

On Monday, 23 March 2020, the President of the Ivory Coast, Mr Alassane Ouattara, declared a state of emergency in view of the COVID-19 virus pandemic.

On 24 March 2020, a curfew from 21:00 to 04:00 came into force and all bars and restaurants were ordered to close until further notice.

The President also announced that confinement measures would be introduced progressively while the government would study the economic impact of the battle against COVID-19.

According to the Ivorian news blog, Yeclo, from 26 March 2020, Gouro Adjame market will be closed.  It is expected to reopen partially on 31 March 2020 after being disinfected.

The same source indicates that a total of 80 COVID-19 cases have been recorded in the Ivory Coast to date, making it the seventh most contaminated country in Africa.

 Port of Abidjan

In the port of Abidjan, the port authority issued a circular to all vessels, consignees and stevedores advising that due to COVID-19, vessels arriving from ports in countries infected by the disease would be submitted to a sanitary inspection in the outer harbour before receiving authorization to enter the Port of Abidjan.

The inspections will be carried out by the services of the National Institute of Public Health (NIPH) of the Government Department of Public Health.

For this purpose, the General Management of Abidjan’s Port Authority has made a launch available to the Sanitary Team so that they can board vessels in the outer harbor.

It should be noted that cost of the inspection, 2,000.00 CFA Francs or approximately Euros 305.00, will be charged to the inspected vessels.
