Port of Matadi (DR Congo) to Expand
The Philippine cargo handling company, ICSTI, is currently building a new mixed
cargo terminal upstream of the port of Matadi in the Democratic Republic of
Congo. This facility should be operational in August 2016. The terminal
will handle containers, breakbulk, trucks and cars, as well as heavy and
voluminous packages. The terminal will include a 1.5 km quay bordering a terrain of 50 hectares.
The 350 million dollar-investment covers the acquisition of three container cranes,
straddle carriers, a storage zone, a warehouse and a rail depot. ICSTI, who owns the land, is the majority
investor in this project which is being carried out with local partners
including SCTP (Société Civile de Travaux Portuaires – ex-Onatra) who hold 10%.
The terminal will modify the layout of the port and probably cause the transfer of
some operations. A marketing campaign is
already underway to attract vessels using feeder services.
While the depth at the quayside is over 40 m, the navigability of the river is still a
matter of concern, the draught being limited once again to 21/22 feet.
