Sierra Leone: Port Stoppage 10/08/24

Budd’s Sierra Leone office reports that after weeks of failed attempts to start pay rise negotiations with the Ministry of Labour, workers at Freetown’s Main Water Quay stopped work earlier today for an unspecified period.

The local press reported that three vessels at the Main Water Quay were idle.

Faced with the risk of economic damage, we understand that the authorities have started negotiations and it is hoped that the strike will be short-lived.

The dockers currently receive SLe 6/hour, which is just under 0,25 Euros.  They claim that they can no longer support their families on this amount.
