Angola: Riots on Streets of Luanda
Following the start of a three-day transport workers’ strike yesterday, our Angola office reports that rioting and looting erupted on the streets. Roads were blocked, vehicles were burned, and several demonstrators are reported dead.
The strike was called in protest of rising fuel and food prices. The government has stated its intention to end fuel subsidies, which heavily impact public spending.
Today, our local office reports that calm has returned to the streets. However, we cannot rule out further disruptions that could affect travel in Luanda.
