Guinea: Protests Today, General Strike Tomorrow

A general strike, referred to throughout the city of Conakry as “Operation Ville Morte” has been called for this Thursday, 21 September 2017 to protest against the government’s failure to introduce reforms announced in 2015.

The 2015 agreement promised changes such as new
local elections and compensation
for victims of political violence.

 A “peaceful
march” is taking place today,
Wednesday 20 September 2017.

Budd’s Conakry office advises
that no major disruptions are expected in the port but recommends that all crew members remain on board their vessels and avoid going on shore as far as possible.
As in the past, it is possible that minor delays in cargo operations
occur if stevedores encounter difficulties on their way to work.

Previous “peaceful” marches have resulted in
clashes between demonstrators and the police.
