Ivory Coast – ISPS Security Level Set at 2

In recent weeks, army mutineers have been demonstrating to force the Ivorian government to give them bonuses. The movement started in Bouake on 6 January and quickly spread to other towns and regions.

Once the government had capitulated to the demands of one group of mutineers, other groups made similar demands.  Non-mutineering troops were called in.

On Wednesay (18 January) shots were  heard in Abidjan as military police fired into the air and blocked access to the port, ordering neighbouring businesses to close for the day.

The port reopened yesterday and SIMAT, a local ship agent, advised us that the ISPS security level had been raised from 1 to 2 in both Abidjan and San Pedro.

Despite the disturbances, we have not heard any reports of death or injury among the civil population and our Abidjan office has remained open thoughout, assisting three vessels who
completed their operations and sailed without hindrance yesterday.

Preparations are currently underway to attend a
fourth vessel this weekend.

Vessels calling in Ivory Coast ports should not
hesitate to contact our Abidjan office or their agent if they have any queries.
