Maritime Security Workshop in Abidjan

As of today (20/02/13), Abidjan will be host to an
Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS)* Seminar/Workshop on
Integrated Maritime Security in conjunction with the African Centre for
Strategy Studies and the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM).

A total of 25 participants from various
government agencies and institutions involved in maritime security will
meet to analyse ECOWAS’ maritime security strategy and evaluate its
capacity to address the increasing threats to martitime security in the
region.

They will also discuss how to integrate any recommendations from the
AFRICOM and African Centre for Strategy Studies into the ECOWAS
Integrated Maritime Security Strategy for optimum effect.

Chaired by the US Ambassador to the Ivory Coast, Phillip Carter III,
this meeting comes at a time when piracy is spreading and developing in
the region.

*ECOWAS’s Members comprise: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Ivory
Coast, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger,
Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.
